Suicidal Tendency

February 18th, 2008

With a recent break - up with his long time girlfriend who cheated on him, Max, a good friend of mine, had several suicide attempts for the past 48 hours. He has been talking about taking his life right after he found out how his girlfriend cheated on him. He was under the state of deep depression and he just cannot hold himself together.

His parents called me up the other day when they saw him overdosing on sleeping pills. It was the first attempt and the other one was just a couple of hours ago when he decided to mutilate himself at the bathroom. This is extremely bad for him and I have decided to drag him to a psychiatrist.

At the consultation room he was crying like there’s no tomorrow. He was swearing as though he was a guy that I hardly knew. Bottomline is, he was so different that time. It was as though I never even knew him at all.

The psychiatrist knew right there and then that this guy is about to kill himself in the next couple of hours if he does not feel loved. What she did was allow him to voice out whatever anguish he had in his heart and punch the bag right behind us. He was punching like a mad boxer who had nothing to lose anymore. After about an hour of total grief, he sat down and cried. The doctor told me to do something that would cheer my friend up.

I organized a small party for him at his place as a surprise and to somehow make him meet a couple of friends who would give out their support as well. Indeed it was a mental case and if this happens again, we are surely bringing him to a hospital. Right now, I am staying at his apartment to watch over him before he tries anything out of hand again. As of this moment he is happy I just hope that this continues. If you have people suffering the same fate, be with them and never leave their side. Make them feel loved and appreciated.

Dance Therapy

February 18th, 2008

Dance therapy is a form of an expressive therapy that makes use of the movement or dance for emotional, cognitive, social, behavioural and physical conditions.

It has been told that the emotional state of someone is greatly affected by his well being as well. Experts say that the mind and the body work hand in hand to make a person’s well-being better.

There was a time that my friend took dance therapy with his son and the therapist found a lot of problems with his son by just looking at the movements and his facial expressions while dancing.

After uncovering the problems, the therapist then recommended that the child be confined in a rehabilitation place since he saw traces of nicotine addiction.

Valentine’s Day Break-up

February 15th, 2008

For most people, Valentine’s day is simply a day that everyone can enjoy the feeling of being loved and to love in return. Problem is, some got totally heartbroken yesterday. My friend just broke up with his girlfriend and really got wasted yesterday. I stayed with him until around 1AM just to check up on him since he has been crying for 6 hours straight. He got dumped for someone else.

I already told him that this girl does not need him and that he has to leave her behind but he just would not listen. When I left, he was still crying. I wanted to stay but my wife needed me also. So what I did was leave the number of my therapist and I think he is working with her now. Matters of the heart are truly something that is hard to cope up with.

The Cognitive Therapy

February 13th, 2008

Cognitive Therapy is usually done to people who are suffering from deep depression who tend to view themselves and the entire environment around them negatively due to the distortions of their thinking. Some of these people are having the all or none thinking. This means that these people are thinking that situations and events that occur can either be all good or all bad. They also tend to overgeneralize things wherein one unfortunate event leads to their interpretation of a series of other unfortunate events. Lastly, they have a selective perception which focuses only on discouraging events.

A trained therapist will find out and allow the patient to recognize the problem and then change the maladaptive cognitive behavior.

My Brother is an Addict

February 13th, 2008

Just recently, my brother confided something to me of which he is scared of letting our parents know. He said he has been smoking weed for quite some time and he cannot stop this addiction. I did not know what to tell him and how to come about it. He said he is willing to stop but he simply cannot. I told him that I could be the one to talk to our parents and he gladly accepted my offer.

When my dad arrived I immediately talked to him and told him about the situation. He was furious as what was expected. Then my brother came walking down the stairs holding something he downloaded from the Internet. It was a brochure for a rehabilitation facility of which he said he is willing to go through in order to fix himself up.

My dad burst into tears after that scenario. He realized that it became a lot easier because my brother is willing to go through the system. That day we became closer to each other. Based on this experience, family is the best weapon against drug addiction. We have to be there for each other during this time of great despair.

Finding Your Sex Therapist

February 12th, 2008

Let us accept the fact that some people really need a sex therapist. Of course, everyone would want to be treated fairly and that they are expecting respect and at the same time they are expecting good results out of the consultation. As mature individuals, a good therapist must understand the feelings of their patients and not take advantage of their weaknesses.

To find a good therapist, they must be able to answer the following questions:

  1. Will I be treated with respect?

  2. Will a treatment plan be shown to me?

  3. Will I be working with a licensed professional?

  4. Will I be given understandable information?

  5. Will I be in a comfortable environment?

  6. Will I be checked up on time?

  7. Will the sessions be kept a secret?

  8. Will I be allowed to attend after hours?

  9. Am I eligible for a rebate just in case?

  10. Am I allowed to negotiate my payment terms?

Exposure Therapy

February 12th, 2008

This type of therapy is known for exposing a person the subject of his or her fear. It may be an exposure to an object or a certain situation. The whole process can be done by a well - trained therapist through exposure or just a visualization. The entire therapy may be quick or it may be gradual.

An intensive exposure therapy is a type of an exposure therapy wherein it is recognized to be a fast way to overcome phobias. The theory behind this is basic. A person who has a phobia about a situation or an object is exposed to it for a certain period of time for him to realize that it will not cause him any harm at all.

So if you have any form of phobia, try doing the exposure therapy and consult with your doctor about it. It is fast and has been proven to be effective.
