
Significant number of Americans facing eating disorders

According to the latest medical study, the number of American men and women treated for eating disorders in hospital has increased.
Based on the data released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality eating disorders rose by 18 percent between 1999 and 2006.
The government health agency explained according to their figures women has the most number of patients suffering from eating disorders at 89 percent.
The study also showed Anorexia nervosa is the most common type of eating disorder that affects a huge number of Americans.
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by extreme low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight.
The condition largely affects adolescent females, who make up more than 40 percent of all cases. As much as 3 percent of American girls and women are anorexic.
Contributing causes may include genetics, personality type, hormones, stress and societal pressures.
Anorexia carries the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric condition.
The latest data coming from the government health agency should drive Americans to engage in healthy living to avoid sickness and death.
To those who are suffering from eating disorders they themselves should exert efforts to find cure from their medical condition.
